Man upcycles old shipping containers to stack & turn them into his dream house

October 16th, 2020

So, check this out – you know how the tiny house trend has exploded, right? Well, one guy came up with a different solution for his home. And what he did far exceed his and other’s expectations. Ultimately, he ended up with the home of his dreams and for less money than it would’ve cost him to build a conventional house.

Shipping containers

That’s right. A guy by the name of Will Breaux decided to purchase old shipping containers that he’d convert into a home. While that might sound a little odd, the project turned out beautifully.

Accessible and affordable

Most people don’t realize how easy it is to find old shipping containers for sale. But even better, they’re relatively cheap. And by connecting several, it’s possible to transform them into a spacious place to live.

A long time coming

As Will explained, the journey to moving into his shipping container home took about 10 years. It started after moving to Houston in 1999. He was interested in buying a standard home but at that time, the area he wanted to live in wasn’t the best. So, he decided on Galleria. In the end, he bought a townhouse where he resided for five years.

Finding land

While exploring the area, Will came across a lot in McGowen. Even with the area being sketchy, he purchased it with the plan of living on it while building a house. That’s when he decided to go the upcycle route. So, he purchased the first shipping container only to learn the city didn’t allow any type of “mobile home” or “tiny house on vacant land.

Working out the details

It took some work but eventually, he was granted permission to build a house out of shipping containers on the piece of property he bought. It took another five years to resolve the issues. Now, he needed to get serious.

Slowly coming together

Will had a vision for his shipping container home. After buying more containers and connecting them, he finished the space enough to live in. But he still had significant work to do both outside and inside.

Multiple perks

Not only did this give him the freedom to create the home of his dreams but he also saved a lot of money. Another benefit…the plot of land he bought was an easy commute into Houston. So, it was a win-win situation all the way around.

Wonderful design features

As will continued to work on his shipping container home, things started to look better and better. He added an outside balcony, using an old metal rail as part of the design. His new house even had a covered carport and beautiful outdoor lighting.

A grand entrance

When approaching the “house,” Will wanted people to feel welcomed. So, he painted the outside a calming blue/gray color with a yellow door. Then, he placed potted plants near the front steps. And with large windows, the interior receives a lot of natural light.

Several surprises

Although Will continues to work on the interior, he’s making great progress. As the owner of McCaw’s, he built an amazing aviary. There is plenty of open space inside, giving the home a comfortable and stylish look and feel.
